L’Appetito opened on Columbus Day, 1981 in a new high-rise building at 30 E. Huron. It was considered by many, a pioneering venture, the little Italian deli venturing out of its Italian neighborhood and into the big city but the big city became its neighborhood and it survived and thrived, evolving with the different new trends of the food industry all the while remaining true to its commitment of providing good quality food at a reasonable price. In 1995, it opened its second location on Michigan Avenue in the John Hancock Center. Larger and bustling with tourists, the new L’Appetito incorporates deli, coffee bar, bakery, wine bar and imported food items while offering plenty of seating inside and out.
The success of both locations is the continued dedication of its founder. Anthony Spatara, his wife Christine, his son Anthony, and his daughter Licia. Tony and Christine were both born in Italy and their appreciation of all that is Italian is evident once you step into their threshold. L’Appetito’s uniqueness is obvious form the brand of coffee it uses, to the bakery filled with delicious Italian pastries and cookies, wonderful gelato, fresh arancini and its grilled panini unlike any other in the city of Chicago. L’Appetito is not Italian in name only, it is Italian by ownership, appearance, and specialties.
